Mai Zetterling, the Swedish actress who went on to a career as one of Europe's busiest female film directors, died on Tuesday in London. She was 68 and had homes in London and in Banne, France. The Mai Zetterling was a complicated woman. She was a writer, actress, author, producer and director rare for a woman of her time. She discusses in her only memoir about her life from Sweden, her father's abandonment and unsucessful reunion, her failures of being mother, her many abortions, her divorces, and living life alone now. Already in her feature debut Loving Couples (Älskande par, 1964), Mai Zetterling emanates as a wilful and highly opinionated creator of rich images with more in common with filmmakers like Luis Buñuel, Alf Sjöberg and Ingmar Bergman than with political social realists of the 1960s and 70s. Mai Zetterling's career as a filmmaker stemmed from her disillusionment with acting.
